I recently read a description of church as “discipleship training ground.” It really grabbed me, because I think it’s right. Jesus gave us the Great Commission in Matthew 28 to “go and make disciples.” That commission is reflected in the mission statement of the United Methodist Church, “to make disciples for the transformation of the world.”
This article argued that our mission in church should be to train people in discipleship, and each one of us so trained are sent to train others in discipleship, growing the church. In the early church, discipleship came first, and then the church. Perhaps we are to be the same, seeing our church as primarily a place to grow disciples and live our discipleship.
Small groups are a powerful way of growing in discipleship. I’m so inspired to see the small groups coming together and people having spiritual conversations.
Peace,
Pastor Mia
