Highs & Lows with God

In the past six weeks I have gotten married to the love of my life and a short four weeks later my 35-year old son died unexpectedly.  A high-high to a low-low.

What a joyous celebration my wedding was.  The whole family was there and my heart was so full as I made and received vows from Jim.  Our honeymoon was wonderful as we grew even closer.  It was the happiest time of my life.

And then last week my son, Antony, died expectedly.  Mostly I am in shock, only occasionally feeling the heartbreak that others feel so easily.  I’ve been through death before, but the death of a child has a different tenor.  I am so blessed to have you (the church), my family, and friends, and especially other parents who have walked this road, to carry me through this time.

What a high and what a low.  God has been there for both.  God continues to be there in the joy of newlywed-hood and the grief of death-of-a-child.  What a poignant reminder that God is not only at church, not only on Sunday mornings, not only a listener to my one-way-prayers, but God is fully present in every moment, rejoicing with me and grieving with me. That is the all-powerful part of God, the ability to stay and be present no matter where we are, carrying us whether we see it or not.

Peace,

Pastor Mia
