LETTING GO

The spiritual journey always involves letting go, but often the loss is not a part of ourselves, but rather that which isn’t us. Every one of us has adopted patterns that served us at some point, but we hold on to them long after they have served their purpose. Letting go becomes an important part of moving forward with God.
I am just back from a trip to Spain and walking the Camino de Santiago. It’s a pilgrimage trail across northern Spain to the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela where the remains of St. James the apostles are buried. Pilgrims have been arriving to the site for over a thousand years and today thousands arrive every day.
One of the traditions is to bring a rock from home and leave it along the trail. I did just that. I brought a rock from home and left it at the base of a cross in the middle of a little town. I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to let go of, what I wanted that rock to symbolize. As I set it down, I was surprised by my emotion as I stepped back. Even though I let go of something that was a negative in my life, I realized how familiar and comfortable it had become. The physical act of letting go, helped me let go spiritually.
Butterflies have to let go too. After emerging front the cocoon, after their wings expand and dry, finally they have to let go in order to fly. They will never experience flight until they let go.
What do you need to let go of to be who you were meant to be in the first place?
Peace,
Pastor Mia
